While the weather holds

October 20, 2014

While the weather was holding out Roger directed our attention to the outside of the house. Remember all of those little lean-to's that had been added on through the years, three to be exact, they all needed to be taken down. I have to admit that I slept through most of this part of the process. Before I was even out of bed in the morning Roger had his sledge hammer out and down they came.

I have to tell a little story about this big one on the back side. In the beginning it was a porch, then it was covered over for a back porch with cute little windows, then that was covered up to make a back storage room and then that was sealed off to become a pet pantry. Yep, one of the renters a while back grew boa constrictors in the upstairs rooms, so they raised their own pet food, rabbits, mice, rats you name it down in this little icky space. It smelled like goats had lived in there. It all had to go. It even smelled worse than the old lady house smell.
The floor was layer upon layer of who knows what. There were a couple of layers of carpet, a couple of whatever that red/blue/green rubber stuff was, plywood, linoleum, and a few layers of unidentifiable stuff nailed together with at least a gallon of nails. Most of that had rotted, but the nails held that rot together very nicely. See that fancy electrical wiring back there?

No idea where it was connected to or where it originally went. It just kind of appeared once we'd pulled off a layer or two. Thanks to Cort and one mighty swing the roof came off in one piece. We didn't even try to pull it apart. It went straight into the trailer. Ugh!
Thumbs up from Tanner when it was all cleared away.

You can see here the windows issue on the second floor. But we'll face that another day.

Add to the list the huge tree stump that was left under the back window.

For today we're just going to prop boards up against the back to protect it from the elements, close the door that doesn't shut and call it a day.
